Christmas light spool math — 250-ft to 4,000-ft selection
Picking spool sizes is a small optimization problem — the goal is to cover the job's linear footage using stock spool sizes with minimum waste and minimum splice count. This guide walks through the math on the five standard stock sizes.
Stock spool sizes
Christmas Light Supplier stocks socket-wire spools in 250-ft, 500-ft, 1,000-ft, 2,000-ft, and 4,000-ft lengths, in both SPT-1 and SPT-2, in green, white, brown, and black jacket colors, across bulb spacings from 6 inches to 48 inches.
Sub-250-ft jobs
For any job under 250 feet, use a single 250-ft spool. The extra spool footage is not waste — it's slack for terminations, drops, and any mid-install re-routes.
250-ft to 1,000-ft jobs
For jobs in the 250-500 ft range, use a single 500-ft spool. For jobs in the 500-1,000 ft range, use a single 1,000-ft spool. Both cases have a single spool with manageable end-of-run slack.
In the specific 501-750 ft range, a 500-ft plus a 250-ft spool is roughly equivalent in cost to a single 1,000-ft spool but introduces one splice terminal on the run. The single 1,000-ft spool is the cleaner installer's pick despite the higher spool footage.
1,000-ft to 4,000-ft jobs
For jobs in the 1,000-2,000 ft range, use a single 2,000-ft spool. For jobs in the 2,000-4,000 ft range, use a single 4,000-ft spool.
For jobs between two stock sizes (e.g., 1,200 ft), the choice is between one larger spool (single 2,000-ft = 800 ft of slack) and two smaller spools (1,000-ft + 250-ft = 50 ft of slack + one splice). Small jobs favor the single-spool option (less splice work); large jobs favor the split option (less unused spool cost).
Multi-spool jobs above 4,000 ft
Above 4,000 ft, plan for multiple spools. The natural stack is 4,000-ft + additional stock sizes to fill the remainder. For example, a 5,500-ft job = one 4,000-ft + one 1,000-ft + one 500-ft, with 0 ft of slack and two splice terminals.
Multi-spool jobs at commercial scale should include termination hardware for each splice (male-female plug pairs) rather than direct-splicing, which reduces install-time-per-splice and simplifies end-of-season take-down.
Minimizing waste with the Kit Builder
The Kit Builder tool at /kit-builder runs greedy-fit spool math on any footage input — pass in the job's linear feet and it returns the stock-spool plan with minimum unused footage.
